Hyssop (Hyssopus officinalis)
Location: Hyssop grows wildly throughout the Mediterranean region and is cultivated in Albania, the Balkan States, France and Hungary.
Extraction: Steam distilled from the leaves.
Colour and Odour: The essential oil is pale yellow in colour and has a deep, penetrating warm aroma with sweet undertones.
Description: A small herb growing up to 60cm in height with slim, pointed leaves and pale blue flowers. It grows in warm, dry hilly places, especially on rocky slopes and sunny meadows.
Background: Long known for its cleansing properties by the Greeks and Romans. Popular with the Benedictine monks during the tenth century, it is also one of the main ingredients of Chartreuse liqueur.
Precaution: This oil is best used in lower concentrations as it may cause irritation in sensitive people.
Uses
Circulatory System- Can be an excellent regulator of blood pressure and can be beneficial for cardiovascular disorders.
Nervous System- A nerve tonic and sedative, hyssop can help strengthen the nerves and aids relaxation.
Skin- Can be very good for bruises and wounds.
Emotion-Clears the mind, giving a feeling of alertness.
